The exhibition opened in Monfalcone “Water, Earth, Fire and Stone: Commitment and Respect for Memory – Vajont: A Lesson” set up in the atrium of the town hall. The exhibition, promoted by Ermada Flavio Vidonis Group and from Commonwill remain open to visitors until 7 May, thus inaugurating a series of exhibitions dedicated to the project of the same name which commemorates the Vajont tragedy. The cultural proposal arrives two years after the frightening fires that devastated the Carso in 2022. And it is precisely to the volunteers and law enforcement agencies who operated with extreme difficulty that the images are dedicated.

The mayor of Monfalcone Anna Maria Cisint thanked his colleague from Duino-Aurisina, Igor Gabrovec, recalling the tragic events experienced in the summer of 2022. “We shared a very delicate moment in 2022 and today we are also talking about this.” Even the presence ofCristofori councilor of the Municipality of Pordenone highlighted the importance of territorial collaboration. “We are grateful for your support and your participation today – declared the mayor of Monfalcone, addressing the guests present – we shared difficult moments and today we are also here to remember them”.

The ceremony saw the participation of the Alpine troops, theauthor Giulia Sandrinof the president of the Ermada Group Massimo Romita and numerous volunteers to whom everyone’s gratitude was expressed for their commitment during difficult phases. «I strongly wanted to represent our administration – underlined the councilor Cristofori of Pordenone – the sharing of territories is essential to face the challenges we face». «We must work together to protect and preserve our environment, the defense of the territory is fundamental – continues Cristofori – nature must be respected and not dominated. Respect for nature is respect for civilization.”

«Monfalcone and Duino Aurisina are connected by the sea and the Karst, and it was there that misfortunes continued to connect us – these are the words of the mayor of Carso, Igor Gabrovec – this opened our eyes to how important it is to invest in prevention, in forest police and in contributions to farmers. We must know how to deal with these situations, work on prevention, so that civil protection teams are equipped, create barriers against high tides when necessary.”

«We have won several tenders which will lead us to have new technologies, drones, thermal cameras, tanks against water bombs – concludes Gabrovec – we need to adopt tools, volunteers who know how to use them and work on prevention. The associations make us feel united in good times and bad, in situations where everything is fine and in situations where their help is needed.”

“Your presence here today is fundamental – declared the president of the Romita association – remembering the past is essential to building a better future”. Massimo Romita then underlined the importance of not forgetting and valorising the work of volunteers, announcing the creation of a video and a catalog to further spread the memory of the Vajont tragedy.

«None of us will ever forget what happened in Friuli Venezia Giulia, the deaths, the tragedy. All this, combined with the need for a healthy message which is that of love for our territory – added Cisint – whenever there was a need, our civil protection was ready to act. The solidarity we have shown in difficult times is what makes us strong. The presence of our civil protection is very important for us. Whenever there is imminent danger they have never backed down, they are a rejuvenated team and this gives us hope. Thanks to all the civil protections of all the municipalities who play a fundamental role.”

«Many times in life we ask ourselves those existential quiz questions, like what would you take if you had to leave home in 10 minutes? This is what happened to my family when, during the fires in the Karst, we had to evacuate our house – explains the author Giulia Sandrin – I know how to write, I know how to translate, and I decided to collect these testimonies in Italian and Slovenian together with many images given by the volunteers themselves, together to the drawings of the children of San Michele del Carso. I have collected these testimonies so that they are not lost, we must remember the solidarity we had in that period. The proceeds from what I wrote will go to charities that deal with the restoration of the Karst and the protection of the territory, thanks to everyone.”

The Region played a fundamental role in financing the project which was included in the Vajont Remembrance Day call. Before the ribbon cutting, there was a musical moment.
