Giarre, fire emergency, numerous areas at risk: many are in the Municipality
As summer approaches, the risk of forest fires in Giarre grows. Various green areas, both public and private, require urgent reclamation interventions to prevent fires.
Above all, the riverbeds of the Jungo and Macchia torrents and the stretch that crosses the town of Santa Maria la Strada, at the northern entrance to the city, are exposed. The bed of the stream is invaded by brambles, brushwood and dangerous waste such as asbestos and combustible oils, which in the event of a fire could release columns of toxic smoke with serious damage to the environment.
The area was the subject of several reports by the Forestry Corps, which carried out numerous inspections. A new cleaning intervention on the fire avenues close to the Macchia stream is expected in May by the firefighting teams of the Forestry Company, as has already happened in the past in other areas at risk in the Giarre area.
Other areas that require urgent reclamation include the uncultivated land in via Liguria, in the Jungo district, invaded by brushwood almost one meter high and with abandoned harmful materials, the areas close to the public housing in via Trieste, where completion of the renovation works on two public residential building complexes. And again: the urban agglomeration of Rovettazzo, at the southern entrance to the city, the uncultivated municipal green areas overlooking via Anselmi, Mercurio and Dante, close to the residential area of Corso Messina.
