The president of the Lazio region Francesco Rocca in collaboration with the councilor for Tourism and Environment Elena Palazzo, has released the data on the bathing suitability of the waters for the entire regional coastal strip, which will accompany bathers in choosing their favorite beach. The results of the sampling, carried out by Arpa Lazio, as Councilor Palazzo had already announced during the Blue Forum in Gaeta, indicate an “excellent” quality in almost all municipalities, with the exception of Terracina, where there are also some stretches of sea judged to have good quality, poor quality or not yet classified. However, like last year, there are 15 stretches of sea classified as not intended for bathing.

The results

The mouth of the Astura river, the Acque Alte – Moscarello mouth and the left bank of the Rio Martino mouth fall within the jurisdiction of the municipality of Latina; for Sabaudia the right mouth of Rio Martino; for San Felice Circeo the port area; for Terracina the mouth of Fiume Portatore – Porto Badino, the port area – mouth of the navigation channel; for Sperlonga the port area; for Gaeta from Punta Stendardo to the commercial port of Gaeta; for Formia from the port to the Miramare Castle and the mouth of the Rio Santa Croce; for Minturno the Porticciolo – mouth of Rio Capo d’Acqua, the mouth of the Garigliano river up to the regional border; finally, for Ponza and Ventotene, the respective port areas. From the data published on the dedicated website of the Ministry of Health, it appears that the only non-swimming area subject to an ordinance for pollution since 2014, and still ongoing, is that of “Villa Castello Giovanni Miramare di Formia”.

The bathing season will start on May 1st and will end on September 30th, while sampling has already started on April 1st and will end, with a few exceptions, at the end of the bathing season. As regards the state of the water it is generally excellent. Some lower parameters, as mentioned, were recorded in some stretches of Terracina (Sisto river, good quality, from Scafa di Ponte to Tumuletti excellent, from 250 meters to the left of the Portatore river good, from 500 meters to the right of the Portatore river poor, from Via Veneto 500 meters to the left of the quay of the port of Terracina excellent, from the small beach in front of “Agostino a mare” still being monitored and similarly for the Terracina – Torre Gregoriana purifier.

Arpa Lazio also monitors two other phenomena. First of all, potentially toxic algae. In particular, the monitoring for 2024 will concern the surveillance of the proliferation of potentially toxic phytoplankton and phytobenthos with particular reference to the unicellular microalga Ostreopsis ovata, which typically flourishes in tropical areas. Based on the results of the previous specific monitoring and the hydrodynamic and geomorphological characteristics of the coast, in particular the following will be kept under control: San Felice Circeo (550 meters to the left of the Torre Cervia lighthouse), Terracina (Fosso Acque Alte), Sperlonga (Bazzano locality ) Formia (Porto Romano). Monitoring involves operating in close contact with the health authorities during the alert and emergency phases for appropriate management measures and the mayors must communicate the measures undertaken as part of the surveillance plan. As regards cyanobacteria, however, a single body of water, namely Lake San Puoto di Sperlonga, was subjected to mandatory monitoring, with different methods based on the intensity of the occurrence of the phenomenon.
