The police officers, during a control service in via della Misericordia, noticed a car proceeding quickly towards via Galermo. Having reached the junction for the ring road, the driver took the access ramp and then accelerated dramatically, only to be chased by the police. The fleeing vehicle then exited the ring road through the San Giorgio interchange, thus reducing its speed. After turning on the flashing lights, the police car managed to come alongside the car, which then stopped on the right edge of the road. The driver turned out to be a 25-year-old from Caltagirone with no criminal record. During the check, a paper bag was noticed placed under the seat on the passenger side, with some transparent cellophane blocks inside which revealed a white substance. Suspecting that it could be cocaine, the police asked for explanations and the young man then admitted his responsibilities, confirming his possession of the drug. Inside the bag there were five blocks, for a total gross weight of 3,239 kilos of cocaine, seized. The , who could therefore be a courier, was arrested for possession for the purpose of dealing drugs and taken to the offices of San Giuseppe la Rena for further formalities. The prosecutor on duty ordered precautionary custody at the Piazza Lanza prison, awaiting the validation judgment before the judge for preliminary investigations.
