Till Death Do Us Part – Plot and trailer

On Rai 4

The film chronicles the wedding night of a young bride (Samara Weaving) that takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game. It’s a lethal “hide and seek” session in which the girl will have to fight for survival.

Tonight on TV:

Before relaunching the “Scream” franchise with two very successful sequels, the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, also known as “Radio Silence”, specializing in horror, directed the not very exciting found footage The lineage of evil (2014), inspired by the classic Rosemary’s Baby. Five years later they return behind the camera and on the big screen for “Till Death Do Us Part”, a horror film seasoned with dark, occult humor and massive doses of gore.

The film borrows the “manhunt” element by wealthy hunters from the classic Dangerous gamea film that inspired films like Without Respite (1993) by John Woo and the most recent The Hunt (2020), bringing the setting inside a sumptuous villa and changing the gender of the protagonist to a bride tricked into participating in a lethal version of Hide and Seek.

Samara Weaving was amazing and very credible in the role of the prey who becomes the hunter, a memorable ending and an excellent result at the box office with 57 million dollars grossed worldwide from the film which cost just 6 million, a real bargain. We remind you that while they are preparing the seventh chapter of “Scream” which ran into some difficulties, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return to Italian cinemas on May 16th with the vampire horror Abigail.

Curiosities about the film

On Rai 4

  • 17 different versions of Grace’s wedding dress were created by costume designer Avery Plewes to show the flow of Grace’s night and how her clothes match her attitude.
  • Samara Weaving had to be taught to drive, or at least make it look like she was driving.
  • The production only had five candlesticks available, so they had to keep moving them to furnish rooms and corridors where necessary.
  • The production submitted nearly 200 fictional board game names, but only eight were cleared by the legal department.
  • Grace’s yellow Chuck Taylor sneakers were actually custom painted for the film, as Converse no longer produces that color.
  • Much of the film was shot at Casa Loma in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is a designated museum property open to the public. You can take guided tours of the building and learn about its history. It is also allowed to cross some secret passages. Many films have been shot there, including Crimson Peak (2015), Nanny mission (2005) e X-Men (2000).
  • The bedroom is part of the Casa Loma conservation, meaning that not only were no candles allowed, but the crew wasn’t even allowed to touch half the furniture or decorations.
  • The Pepper Box revolver wielded by Emilie has been the version of the firearm in the North American edition of the board game “Cluedo” since 1972. It was adopted by the European edition of “Cluedo” in 1996.
  • The Le Domas family’s board game empire is based on the now-defunct game makers Milton Bradley Company and Parker Brothers. Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers games are now owned by Hasbro.
  • Within LaVeyan Satanism, the term “shemhameforash” is used during rituals as outlined in the Satanic Bible. The term is essentially an equivalent of “hallelujah” in the sense that it is intended to mean “Hail Satan” when used in this context, to corroborate LaVeyan Satanism’s goal of acting as a blasphemous foil to traditional religious practice.
  • There’s a tattoo of a chili pepper on Samara Weaving’s hand. “People still think she’s a feather,” the actress said.
  • The production purchased all the stuffed animal heads from the same place, including the bear who held the goat’s head in his mouth.
  • Exterior shots of the film’s mansion were of Parkwood Estate in Oshawa, Ontario (Canada), which are the same grounds used in the film Billy Madison (1995).
  • Margot Robbie was considered for the role of Grace before Samara Weaving was cast. The two actresses have a strong resemblance.
  • The family portraits are all based on the actor Henry Czerny who plays the head of the family and are kept in storage in Toronto.
  • The goat pit was the only set built for this film.
  • Samara Weaving and Mark O’Brien both wrote their initials on a brick in the tunnel they enter at the 31:23 mark. It’s a public space at the historic site where they filmed in Toronto. They weren’t the first.
  • At 48 minutes into the film the insert of the hoist gears actually shows the gears of the clock tower of London’s Big Ben.
  • The masks that the Le Domas family uses in the prologue are reminiscent of the masks used in the two-part episode 5×25 The masks (1964) of the TV series On the edge of realitywhere they are worn by members of a wealthy family.
  • Fox Searchlight Pictures asked the directors not to overdo the fog, but “we got a little carried away because we love the fog.”
  • Le Bail means “lease” in French. Mr. Le Bail “grants” his wealth to the family.
  • Elyse Levesque (Charity Le Domas) revealed that on set she had no idea how to hold a spear gun and no one told her whether she was doing it right or not. Since all Le Domas are supposed to be airheads with no idea what they’re doing, not telling her how to hold a spear gun was probably the best move.
  • Grace’s shivers in the photoshoot scenes were actually out of context. Samara Weaving reported that she was cold while they were filming that scene, hence the shivers, but the coincidence worked to make her seem nervous more convincingly, something Weaving herself admitted.
  • The board games in the cabinet are: Family Ritual (Family Ritual), Secret Council (Secret Council), Le Bail’s Gambit (Le Bail’s move), Sunrise (Dawn) e Abracadabra.
  • Despite appearing as American in many of her film roles, Samara Weaving is Australian.
  • With the exception of Grace, Daniel and Becky, the Le Domas, including Fitch and the butler Stevens, are played by Canadians.
  • What appears to be a “William Moore & Co.” 8 gauge shotgun of Belgian manufacture is seen in a weapons display in the villa of the Le Domas family. The same rifle is held by Grace during the film.
  • The first long shot of the two kids running through the hallways is actually three shots with two cuts edited as the kids turn a corner and the image goes dark.
  • Stevens the butler’s car is a 2003 Lincoln Town Car.
  • Samara Weaving, Adam Brody and Henry Czerny appeared in the “Scream” franchise. Weaving and Czerny in Scream 6 (2023). Adam Brody in Scream 4 (2011).
  • Samara Weaving, the protagonist of the film who plays the unfortunate Grace, is the granddaughter of the well-known British actor Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith from “The Matrix” and King Elrond in “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”). Hugo resides in Australia along with several family members.
  • The nail going through Grace’s hand is CG, which is why the directors were concerned about the scene’s believability until they saw Samara Weaving’s performance.
  • The American censors (MPAA) asked to translate the Latin used during the sacrificial ceremony so that they could adequately evaluate the film.
  • The goat that jumps out and scares Grace into falling into the well was originally designed as a puppet, but when they shot the first shot of the puppet they realized it didn’t work. “Good thing those goat brawlers like to knock things down.”
  • Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy, the film’s screenwriters appear in a cameo at the 32:16 mark. They play crossbow experts in the YouTube video.
  • James Vanderbilt, screenwriter of Zodiac And The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as well as director of the biopic Truth – The price of truthplays uncredited Mr. Le Bail when he appears before Grace in her chair.
  • Co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin appears in the film in a vocal cameo: he is the voice of the driver of the sports car.
