“Readings on the Po”, meeting with Guido Conti on Friday
Descriptive text here

New appointment of review of Readings on the Po Friday 26 April, at 6.30pm Antica Osteria del Fico (via Guido Grandi, 12 – Cremona), which will see the protagonist the writer Guido Conti. At the center of the meeting the Po, a very familiar river and the focus of numerous Conti publications. A return to the places he himself lived and where he is originally from.

Starting from the book The Great River Po, Conti will take you to the places that populate its banks, describing the cultures that have come and gone there over the centuries to reach the present day. Ever since the Greeks sailed upstream to trade with Euboea, the ancient Eridanos, the original name of the Po, has in fact influenced the habits and customs of the civilizations of these areas: from the Ligurians to the Gauls, from the Etruscans to the Romans, as well as the Lombards. Migrations have affected these territories massively, so much so that today there are many Indians from Pyunjab, who have recognized in our lands a landscape similar to that of their origin. New faces that reveal the need for progressive integration.

The Po river marks not only distinct populations and cultures, but also different territories: the writer underlines, for example, how different the Po of Turin is from that of Piacenza, as well as from that of the delta. Authors such as Pavese, Salgari, Guareschi, Zavattini and Fellini have effectively reported the coastal imaginaries in all their facets. Not only that: art, literature, gastronomy and architecture have also clearly been influenced by their geographical reality. Environmental policy itself will therefore have to take this into account, preparing to face future challenges.

The river will also be discussed from the point of view of the islands that are found along its course: from Isola Serafini, characterized by the presence of a hydroelectric power station, but also by an almost poetic landscape, up to those that have disappeared in the meantime like the island of S. Andrea, which currently should have been located at the height of Calendasco. Islands that are at the center of an ongoing work that Guido Conti is completing. Myth and tradition will thus intertwine in this evocative meeting, in which there will be no shortage of curious anecdotes, alongside science and history.

The event is open to all, upon reservation to be made by contacting the Vasta Area Sector offices via the address [email protected] or by calling the numbers 0372/407672 – 553.
