“Safety is like air”

The dynamics of the events and the possible responsibilities for what happened yesterday, 19 April, will be ascertained by the investigators who opened an investigation immediately after the incident. Cortona mourns the passing of Manuel Cavannathe 23-year-old from Le Chianacce, who died while serving as an external worker in the Elle Emme company, a company specialized in the construction of boxes and sheds for horses and located in the Tre Berte area, in the municipality of Montepulciano.

According to what has been reconstructed, the tragedy occurred around 12.30. The boy was working on an agricultural trailer together with his boss when, suddenly, an iron tube broke away from him, hitting him in the chest. Every rescue attempt was in vain, as was the desperate rush of emergency vehicles.

As ordered by the chief prosecutor at the Siena court, Andrea Boni, the area where the accident occurred was seized while the young man’s body was returned to his family as there was no need to arrange an autopsy. Carabinieri and ASL prevention, hygiene and safety personnel in the workplace are carrying out the necessary investigations.

Manuel also expressed his passion for engines and mechanics through posts on his social profiles where there are numerous images depicting motorcycles and cars. As well as his love for nature and fishing, a sport he practiced together with friends and local associations.

“Safety at work is like air”

Terrible news that did not take long to arouse deep condolences in the Cortona community. L’municipal administration expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Manuel Cavanna, addressing them with his deepest condolences, reiterating his full trust in the work of the judiciary, his trust in ascertaining any responsibilities and appealing to the entire world of work to put the issue at the center of safety.

Words also made his own by the cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice who, in an official note, underlined “the importance of reflecting on the need to put an end to deaths at work. Pope Francis was clear on this issue: safety at work is like the air we breathe: we realize its importance only when he tragically passes away, and it is always too late”.

The president of the regional council of Tuscany, Antonio Mazzeo, on behalf of the Legislative Assembly, expresses the condolences for the death of the young worker and expresses closeness to the victim’s family, friends and work colleagues.

“Losing your life in the workplace is a dramatic event that should never happen and which calls each of us, for our part, to do more”, he said Michele Angiolinimayor of Montepulciano who joined in the condolences of the family.
