PAVIA. Still cold for the whole week and, from Monday 22nd, even rain. Which on the hills could turn into snow. In short, a full-blown winter at least for the first few days. It’s all the fault of the flows of cold air from the Atlantic which in recent days have lowered temperatures by up to 25 degrees compared to just seven days ago. Cold air from the North which in a few days will give way to the cold air coming from the Baltic countries, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, which will make our teeth chatter even more.
The cold in the areas of the province
«But I wouldn’t talk about the exceptional nature of the climate situation – explains meteorologist Tommaso Grieco –. Exceptional, if anything, were the almost 30 degrees reached last Sunday. Late frosts are not uncommon in April. Now we feel them more because temperatures have dropped by 25 degrees in a week.” Just to give an example, the record was recorded on Sunday 14th in Corteolona, with 30.2 degrees. In Pavia, 29. On Friday morning, however, the Paviameteo station recorded a minimum of 4.4 degrees. With peaks of -1.2 on Penice or 0.8 in San Eusebio di Fortunago. But the deep winter cold did not spare the other cities either: 2.6 in Vigevano, and 2.4 in Voghera.
In recent years, Grieco still recalls, April has often brought cold days. «Last year there were temperatures around 2/3 degrees, but in the first decade – he says -. But by the middle of the month we were already at 20/22. The same was true in previous years. In 2021 we went below zero on April 8th. In short, today it is not such an anomalous situation.” But we will forget the boiling flows of the Horn of Africa (never recorded by meterology, as known) of last Sunday 14th for a while.
The forecast for the next few days
«Now the situation has been reversed – explains the expert -. The Azores anticlone settled on the Atlantic, causing the coldest currents to slide from the North Sea which used the eastern edge to descend, reaching us. The tropical anticlone was thus “pushed back” to its lands of origin.”
But what weather awaits us in the next few days? «Even colder air will descend, this time from the eastern quadrants, i.e. from the Baltic countries – explains Grieco –. This will also lead to the arrival of low pressure, with moderate rain starting from Sunday evening. And on Monday, the coldest day, snow could also arrive in Oltrepo, at 7/800 metres. Looking ahead, good weather should return in the middle of the week, with a slight rise in temperatures which will be within the seasonal average. However, it is difficult to predict rising hot air from Africa at least until 27/28 April”.
