The price of electricity continues to fall – Nordest24

Good news for Italian families. Drop of 19.8% electricity price in the second quarter of 2024 for those still served in the Protected Market. This decreasing trend was favored by the fall in wholesale prices of natural gas and electricity, which had already started at the end of 2023.

From July, as required by law, however, price protection will be said goodbye in favor of the Free Market, where instead the cost of the energy component is established by each supplier and not by ARERA. To navigate the offers of the numerous market operators, you can turn to comparison sites such as Segugio.it and compare the proposals and any discounts and advantages combined with the rates. In general, in the rich list of tariffs there are, in fact, solutions with a fixed price for a minimum period of twelve months and those with an indexed price which provide for the application of the PUN, i.e. the Single National Price, to which is added a surcharge which represents then the supplier’s concrete profit.

Meanwhile those who are still served by the Greater Tutela will spend the sum of approximately 662 euros in the period from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024. The calculation was carried out by ARERA taking into account a typical family that has average electricity consumption of 2,700 kWh per year and a committed power of 3 kW. There is therefore a drop in prices of -47.7% compared to the 12 months of the previous year (1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023), when instead a record level of costs was reached.

Towards the Free Market

ARERA – Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and the Environment – makes it known that as of December 31, 2023, almost 73% of domestic customers had already chosen an offer on the Free Market. Non-vulnerable domestic customers, still served under Greater Protection, amounted to approximately 4.5 million at that date. Protection services are expected to end in July 2024 for non-vulnerable domestic electricity customers, while for gas the protection service already ended in January.

From 1 July, all non-vulnerable customers served under Greater Protection, if they have not made their choice on the Free Market, will mechanically switch to Gradual Protection Service, with the supplier chosen via auction in that area. This transitional service will be active for just under three years: in fact, it will be valid until 31 March 2027. In the absence of an express choice, customers will continue to be supplied by the same seller on the free market.

For the ARERA president, Stefano Besseghini, the time has come for consumers to evaluate annual costs and consumption and understand whether they are served by the Free Market or under Protection and whether returning to Protection can represent a convenient choice. Domestic electricity customers who are currently in the Free Market, in fact, have the right to return to the Greater Protection service until 30 June 2024, by contacting the service provider in the Municipality where the supply is located.

Vulnerable customers

For vulnerable customersInstead, ARERA will continue to update the economic conditions of the Greater Protection on a quarterly basis even after 1 July 2024. This category includes customers who:

they are in economically disadvantaged conditions, such as bonus recipients;

are in serious health conditions that require the use of medical-therapeutic equipment powered by electricity;

are subjects with disabilities pursuant to article 3 of law 104/92;

have a user in an emergency housing facility following calamitous events;

they have a user on a smaller, non-interconnected island; are over the age of 75.

The customer served under greater protection who has not yet been identified as vulnerable, despite falling into this category, must communicate this to his seller by filling out the form which will also receive the greater protection from his merchant in two communications between September 2023 and June 2024, so as to continue to be served in the enhanced protection service.
