On 23 April, the performance of the cantata of San Giorgio composed by maestro Bruno Coli and performed by 450 children in Piazza De Ferrari, procession of Guzzi motorbikes. GENOA – Genoa is preparing to celebrate the sixth edition of the Flag Festival, Tuesday 23 April, on St. George’s Day, with a rich program of events, which pays homage to the flag that has been a symbol of the city and of Genoese pride since the times of the Crusades and of the Maritime Republic.
With the support of the National Association of Alpini and Proloco, it began, like every year, this morning, from the markets of via Anzani in Sampierdarena and of piazza Palermo (attached pictures), the distribution of the Red Cross flags in squares and city markets, covered and weekly, to renew the tradition for many Genoese people and commercial activities of displaying them on balconies or in shop windows.

The program of the Flag Day
Saturday 20 April, from 3pm to 6pm, we start with the “Treasure Hunt of San Giorgio”: an intriguing orientation walk to discover old and new memories, linked to the figure of San Giorgio and his banner, hidden among the treasures of the historic center of Genoa. To register you will need to send an email [email protected] (booking required by Saturday 12pm), indicating the name of the team and the number of participants (maximum 10 per team). The meeting is at 2pm in the courtyard of Palazzo Tursi, with the delivery of the “kit” to the teams.
On the occasion of the Flag Day, the fountain in Piazza De Ferrari and the Lantern will be illuminated in red and white. Palazzo Ducale and the Carlo Felice Theater will display a large flag of Genoa on their facades, while from the 22nd, with the first light of the evening, images of the flag of Genoa will be projected on the LED wall of the Liguria Region building.
The program for April 23rd
At 9am the departure of a procession of Moto Guzzis is scheduled to carry the flags of Genoa around the city. At 4.30 pm in Piazza De Ferrari the awards ceremony for the “Treasure Hunt of San Giorgio” will be held. At 4.45pm, again in Piazza De Ferrari, the choir made up of 450 children, coming from comprehensive schools throughout the city, will perform a cantata written and composed specifically for the event by the musician Bruno Coli. The text traces the history of San Giorgio and the Flag, a union between words and music that aims to bring even the littlest ones closer to knowing one of the main symbols of the city.
This year too, the official ceremony will start at 5.30 pm in the hall of the Maggior Consiglio of Palazzo Ducale: the Hymn of the Flag, composed by Maestro Nevio Zanardi, will be performed and the emotional video dedicated to the city of Genoa, its flag and its history. After the institutional greetings, there will be a speech by the coordinator of the Culture Table Giacomo Montanari entitled “The San Giorgio di Pietra: for an enhancement of the portals of the historic center”.
During the ceremony, the City of Genoa Medal will be awarded to the Filarmonica Sestrese and the new 12 Ambassadors of Genoa in the World will be appointed. Guests of the ceremony will be the coaches of Genoa and Sampdoria, Alberto Gilardino and Andrea Pirlo, world champions in 2006, who have chosen Genoa as the city to live and work.
The ceremony, which will also see an interlude dedicated to tango in view of the Italian Tango cup & festival scheduled in Genoa, will end with the performance of maestro Francesco Meli who will sing Paolo Francesco Tosti’s song “The last song” and “ A furtive tear” by Gaetano Donizetti.
