15 April 2024:
An Iraqi court on April 14, 2024 sentenced six people to death for drug trafficking, including three foreign citizens.
“The Central Criminal Court has issued an execution sentence against six drug dealers found guilty of drug trafficking”, reads the statement from the press office of the Supreme Judicial Council, which does not specify the nationality of the three foreigners.
Four of the convicted, including a foreigner, operated within an international network for the sale of marijuana and were found in possession of 2.8 kg of the substance.
The other two foreigners were found in possession of 10 kg of opium and various narcotic substances, the statement reads.
In May 2023, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani stressed the importance of waging “a war on drugs”, stating that drug trafficking remains one of the main ways to finance terrorism and that drug circulation thrives in the shadow of terrorism.
