New album and a film

He does so starting from his new album ‘Sei nell’anima’, released on Friday 22 March: “It’s a life path that led me to make this album. I started from the word silence because it gave off the idea of ​​an intimate space that we have inside. With a style somewhat close to the style of music that made me grow up, African-American music and blues, soul music”. But also a film coming out on May 2nd: “I made the album first, then that film, then we will go on tour and the tour takes the title of the album ‘Sei nell’anima‘”,a new album of unreleased songs that becomes a project: a record, a book, a film and an international tour. A journey into Gianna Nannini’s musical and personal universe between stories, memories, militancy and hope.

Its story begins in Siena, in the Oca district where “when you are born in a district the first thing they do is bring you the flag that accompanies you from birth until death. My mother gave birth to me and immediately afterwards they brought me a flag with a drum roll, I think this atmosphere influenced me”. A childhood that saw her move from life in the district and the moment when “I won my first Palio, I was five years old I think, and those are the things that remain there forever“on moving to the countryside”from nine to eighteen I lived in the countryside writing music and singing it”. Without forgetting the school and university years “I did my first year of university and after that I continued studying because I was interested in the topic of philosophy and anthropology, I studied science but I had a bad feeling for mathematics inside” he joked. Then the move to Milan where she started writing and singing with her unmistakable style, as in the song “‘America’, which is a metaphor for freedom. I was in Mauro Paolucci’s house and he started making some chords on which I started improvising a melody, and then the lyrics were born”. Before success, his apprenticeship in the bars where “we had sessions with musicians, we had the Rolling Stones, and I was already making my own songs and mixing them with this and from there I formed”. A unique style also characterized by the strong themes present in the lyrics “even in Milan there were discussions on divorce and abortion, and I frequented collectives including those of libertarian feminism and therefore there we were trained with self-awareness, we talked about the problems of finding freedom first inside and then outside, bringing ourselves out themselves and then the demonstration in the collective did the rest”. Until Mike Bongiorno discovered his talent.”at the time there were no talent scout, but he did a similar thing with Longari and went to events. Mike Bongiorno took me on and then I auditioned for Rai. I was selected by him to audition for Fonit Cetra“, and then also by Mara Maionchi “I did the songs on the piano and she cried; from that I understood that maybe I was good. She was head of Battisti’s record company. They took care of me, letting me be who I was at that moment as a singer-songwriter”. A way of doing things that has always accompanied her in her music, even in the new album ‘1983’ in which she writes that she was born without gender and specifying that she doesn’t like society’s labels: “The problem is that others put labels to divide. On the other hand, if one is without labels, he is perfect because he does not belong to a genre. How do you belong to a genre in this era? In my opinion one belongs to the human being, especially regarding the freedom to express oneself as a human being”. Then aided by a great determination which is one of his trademarks “If I don’t like something, I have to shout about it. I have this physical need that I need to change them. I break everything”. A personality of her own, which almost led her to act alongside Sharon Stone in ‘Basic Instinct 2′: “I was in Milan when I received a phone call from Hollywood: ‘you have to audition, Sharon Stone wants to do the Basic Instinct 2 and he wants her’. She was crazy about ‘Profumo’. Except that the film was all in English, and although I had prepared, going to London I felt uncomfortable and the audition didn’t go very well. In the end, they cut the scene.”he says laughing. However, there is no shortage of deeper reflections on some themes, starting from his most iconic song: “I learned to be in the soul. The concept of loving yourself is too often based on aesthetics, but instead it is important to feel that you are doing the right thing: self-esteem is important because otherwise you cannot relate to the other person and love them, it’s true, so they must accept you and love you”. Without forgetting to also remember the less pleasant moments of his past, such as when his piano teacher “he tried when I was 13 and at that age you don’t understand very well what’s happening, and you don’t tell anyone. Keeping it inside is never good. So I highly recommend, when something happens, to notify the person closest to you”. But in addition to the most difficult moments there are also happy moments, such as the birth of her daughter Penelope, for which she received a lot of criticism.”which was a bit like being raped: all this massacre, all this being everywhere in the media for what I did.
