What will Steven Spielberg’s new film be? The answer presents several possibilities as there are currently several projects on the legendary director’s desk, let’s try to take stock of the situation.
According to rumors Spielberg’s new film will be announced later this yearbut apparently it might not be Bullitt: the latest rumors, in fact, claim that the Bullitt remake/sequel will be the film following the next one, given that a new draft of the screenplay is currently being written.
In the meantime, the DC superhero film Blackhawks seems definitively archived: at a certain point Spielberg was ready to leave – it should have been the film following The Fabelmans – but the birth of James Gunn’s DC Studios put a brake on the project, which was cancelled. Another project that has fallen off the radar is The Thursday Murders Club: it was supposed to be the adaptation of a mystery set in an old people’s home with Meryl Streep and Viola Davis, it was in development before the strikes but apparently this too was cancelled.
On the contrary, a project that Spielberg is seriously considering making an adaptation of Leopoldstadt by Tom Stoppard: Originally announced last March as a miniseries, the title is taking the form of a feature film. Recently, Spielberg hired Justine Triet to write a screenplay for his new film, and it could be this project.
Finally, the second title Spielberg is considering is The kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara: in the works since 2017, the film already has a complete screenplay written by Tony Kushner, but even though Marco Bellocchio released his film about Mortara, Kidnapped, last year, it seems that Spielberg wants to go ahead with his version anyway.
Finally, space for Napoleon by HBO: the 7-part TV series based on the legendary screenplay by Stanley Kubrick it will be produced by Spielberg, who however according to the latest rumors will assign the directing duties to Cary Joji Fukunaga, as already happened with the recent Masters of the Air.
