A series of videos, podcasts, selections of films, documentaries and images to remember the figure of Giacomo Matteotti, thanks to a virtual exhibition entitled “Matteotti 100 (1924 – 2024). One hundred years of anti-fascism and civil courage”, edited by INDIRE And Filippo Turati Historical Studies Foundation, as part of the “Memory of Freedom” project, funded by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – Mission structure national anniversaries and national and international sporting events.

When will the presentation be?

The exhibition is an online environment aimed primarily to schools of all levels, but also to all those who want to delve deeper into the figure of Matteotti and his historical period, through archive and multimedia materials, capable of carrying out an accurate analysis of his figure, of his role in the context of the movement Italian reformist socialist and militant anti-fascism: an in-depth perspective full of ideas on one of the crucial episodes of Italian political history. The selected materials and the paths are in fact a valid tool for discussing at school not only the crime, but also the historical and political context in which it is placed, within the framework of a active and participatory teaching of history. The journey starts from historical cultural context where Giacomo Matteotti lived, the second section presents his biographythe third section focuses on The crime; follows the one dedicated to Matteotti in the media, in which it is remembered – through photos and archive documents – that after his assassination, the political climate is even more oppressive and the regime intensifies its repression against any form of opposition or criticism. In this context, the political satire becomes even riskier and, despite repression, some forms of resistance and dissent persist through clandestine channels and unofficial means of communication; among these, the most common are caricatures and satirical drawings. The fifth section is The memory of the socialist politician: commemorations and initiatives to remember the figure of Matteotti and his commitment to democracy, to transmit to the new generations the values ​​of freedom and justice for which he fought. The educational path ends with Pacifism, in which we come, Matteotti’s anti-militarist and pacifist position is explored in depth.

The materials

The virtual exhibition was created thanks to the collaboration of important historical archives, first and foremost the Archive of the Turati Foundationwhere the Matteotti papers donated by the family are kept, but also from the Audiovisual Archive of the Workers’ Movement and Democratic From Rome, from the historical archive of the Istituto Lucefrom the Alinari Foundation for Photography – FAF Toscana and from the portal Rai School.

Interviews with experts who simply define some aspects of the Matteotti affair; four short videos dedicated to Matteotti’s story for the youngest primary school children (the result of research conducted by INDIRE with the chair of Educommunication at the University of Huelva – ES, coordinated by Ignacio Aguaded); five podcasts ‘The courage of Matteotti’ resulting from the history workshop conducted by INDIRE with Elena Cicconi and the students of the Istituto Comprensivo di Civitella Torricella (Teramo); film selection ‘Matteotti100’ edited by F. Caprino (INDIRE), also visible in the INDIRE environment “The school on the screen”.
