And on his tennis specifically, from technique to tactics, the one with Enqvist would be an important new investment with a high profile figure, in the past already Davis Cup captain of Sweden, and also present for a few months in 2022 in Stefanos Tsitsipas’ team. In the same year, however, Berrettini and Enqvist fought for Team Europe in the Laver Cup, where for years the Swede acted as second to captain Bjorn Borg.
For more information we will obviously have to wait for the words of Berrettini himself, who however has already provided some clues: “When I manage to be aggressive in return, the opponent feels pressure. My service games go away quite easily: if I create more chances in return I can really move the balance.”
The Tennis Data Innovations rankings, which measure the quality of shots on a scale from 1 to 10, see him in 6th place in terms of serve (8.71), but in 47th in terms of overall return quality (6.47). Furthermore, in 2025 he won 3% fewer games in return than a year ago (from 19% to 16%) and 2% fewer overall points (from 35% to 33%).
The path is therefore traced, but the basis from which to start is always mental and athletic freshness because “the two things are connected”, he pointed out. Proof, even before Davis, was given at the beginning of the year with the quarter-finals reached in the Masters 1000 in Miami and the round of 16 in Monte-Carlo. Results that had brought him back to the Top 30 in May, just a few days before the new physical problems that had forced him to miss the entire North American trip in the summer, including the US Open.
At the moment, Berrettini is not registered in any draw for the tournaments preceding the Australian Open, which could therefore be – barring participation with wild cards or through qualifiers in the first two weeks – the first official tournament of 2026. “I’m excited”, commented Matteo, determined to return once again to the top levels of world tennis.
