FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtreeof which he is director, will be there first and last expansion of the famous open world soulslike. The statement was made to the Chinese newspaper Zhihu, where he explained that, unlike what happened with other titles in the past, such as Dark Souls 3, here there will be only one DLC. The reason? The open world nature of the game.

Miyazaki’s statement

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree will be the first and only expansion for the game

“Shadow of the Erdtree is the first and last DLC. We have no plans to add more content to Elden Ring,” Miyazaki said, before explaining: “Elden Ring emphasizes theexploration and adventure in a vast world. To carry out this experience there is inevitably a need for a very vast scenario. So instead of splitting it into multiple parts, it was better to make a single, large expansion. If we had sold them separately, we would have reduced the exploration and sense of adventure.”

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree launches on June 21, 2024 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Fans have no fear, because the fact that the game will no longer be expanded does not exclude the possibility of a future followingas explained by Miyazaki himself, for which FromSoftware always leaves the endings of its games open in the event of continuing them as a series.

Elden Ring itself was one of the most successful titles of 2022, capable of selling tens of millions of copies (23 million in February 2024), becoming a real social phenomenon. Surely these sales will lead to something, given that the publisher Bandai Namco and FromSoftware itself will certainly not miss the opportunity to exploit the intellectual property.
