What happens to dogs after a year on a vegan diet? Here are the results

American scientists have put the to the test vegan diet for dogs for an entire year, carefully monitoring the impact on their health. Previously the experiment had been carried out on two human twins; in fact, dogs are considered basically carnivorous. So what? What are the outcomes?

During the study, conducted by the Western University of Medical Sciences in California, fifteen dogs of different breeds were fed exclusively with a vegan food based on pea protein. This change in diet was a real test, as all the participants came from a traditional meat-based diet. To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of this diet, scientists performed regular checks, including blood and body tests, as well as periodic clinical consultations with owners.

The results? Surprisingly positive. Previously overweight or obese dogs have recorded a significant weight loss, while those with normal weight kept it stable. Not only that, tests revealed that levels of amino acids, vitamins, and other health indicators remained within desired limits. Important to underline, no dogs showed signs of heart diseasea common concern with plant-protein diets.

It would have been curious to find out whether a vegan diet would help prevent rheumatoid arthritis in animals too. But clearly more in-depth experimentation would be necessary and over a much longer period of time.

This study certainly does not close the debate on veganism animalbut it certainly opens up a new perspective: with proper formulation, the vegan diet could be both safe and beneficial for dogs.
