Josh Sawyer he is the director of Fallout: New Vegasconsidered by many to be the best chapter of the series.
New Vegas in fact it still is today one of the most appreciated chapters of the entire saga (you can find it in the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate catalogue, on sale at Amazon) although Obsidian never made it official a sequel.
It is also true that the game is lately experiencing a real second youth thanks to the Prime Video series.
In any case, as also reported by GamesRadarlong before bringing to light New VegasSawyer thought he had wasted his only chance to make a game of Fallout.
In an interview with Rock Paper ShotgunSawyer talked about his time at the developers of Black Isle Studios.
Black Isle had great success in the 90s, creating some of the best CRPGs of all time, including the first Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment and, indeed Fallout 1.
After years of financial difficulties, however, Black Isle closed in December 2003. With it, plans for the Baldur’s Gate 3 original, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 3 and what would have been Fallout 3with Sawyer in charge of the project.
Like the first two games, this version of Fallout 3 it would have been an isometric RPG, rather than a first-person title as Bethesda later decided. But when Black Isle closed, the project was doomed.
Sawyer eventually resigned from the company, and in doing so, he was certain he had lost his “dream” of making a Fallout: “losing that project hurt”.
That project, known internally as Van Burennever saw the movie, but Sawyer – who thought he was done with the series – then directed Fallout: New Vegas. In short, it seems it was worth the wait.
In any case, Fallout-mania has definitely exploded, so much so that even the sites dedicated to mods have crashed.
After all, the sales made us understand right away what the outcome would be Fallout in these post-show weeks.
