Robots, smart glasses, Machine Web, return to the Moon: our predictions on the technology of 2026

At the end of 2022, for predictions for the following year, we asked ChatGpt directly to “imagine” the coming twelve months of artificial intelligence. The response was rather disappointing: the model was just born, he was crawling. But those few days of life were enough to configure a situation that had not occurred for at least 20 years (i.e. since the spread of the Web): the newborn (OpenAi) outwitted the boss (Google). Power of technological development, capable of unforeseeable reversals. However, things have changed in the digital decades, big tech has solid foundations: three years later, today, it is OpenAi that is raising the red alarm. The AI’s ride is less “naive” than that of the Internet, the big digital brands play at home anyway: it is not the radical paradigm shift between analogue and digital, it is the latter that builds on itself. The bubble is there, but it’s less scary.
So what will happen in the next twelve months in the “catch-all” world of digitalsuper-vitaminized by Ai? We discussed it in the editorial office. And in the next pages we will tell you about the cavalcade of robots, let’s say artificial intelligence with a physical basis, which will begin in just a few days with the CES fair in Las Vegas. Glasses – we’ve been saying it for years, but this time it’s true – are ready to hire a new role that goes beyond myopia or glamour: they see, they speak, they “reason”. Through the lenses, the world will appear “augmented” by the information provided by the Ai. And our use will teach AI to better understand the physical world. They will be trained new artificial intelligence models – they are called World Model -, capable of learning beyond the mass of texts, videos and books that today feed the Large Language Models.
The Moon, then, 57 years laterwill return to be the protagonist of our dreams: the big leap for humanity will be this time a colony, the first extra-terrestrial. In 2030, perhaps, but 2026 will stabilize the foundations for this new conquest. And if you ask yourself what AI has to do with it, the answer – although generic – is simple: Ai is everywhere, it is the universal ingredient for every recipe. If we don’t like the taste, the solution will be to get used to it. Because we are heading towards what Demis Hassabis calls “Ai World”: a new world, where man will have to learn to coexist with another entity, not supernatural as in the past, but officially created by us. Another discovery from 1969, the most important but least celebrated of the landing, that is, the Internet, is destined to continue a radical change in the coming months: the Internet will be increasingly governed by AI and the Web, the noblest child born (in Europe) of the Internet, risks starting an irreversible change. More and more “written” by machines. Machines that do not click links or advertising banners, the economic basis of the current web. Here the revolution has just begun and the results are not predictable.
The new alien intelligences, because they are based on statistics, will drive cars (will 2026 be the year of the definitive launch of “robotaxis”?), they will control our work (it’s called bossware, and you won’t like it), they will record, synthesize and, of course, stock up on everything. How? With a mad rush to data centers, another certain trend of the new year. Everything will be in a rush, yes even more sobecause speed/timing when it comes to Ai makes a difference, and it makes a difference in terms of billions of dollars. It’s Ai World, baby.
