«A difficult year comes to an end which has left me with a very tough challenge». Igor Protti published a post on Instagram to greet 2025, after the difficulties of recent months related to health conditions. Also on social media in July he announced that he had been diagnosed with a malignant neoplasm and the need to begin treatment. A situation that led him to spend a different New Year’s Eve than ever before, at home with his partner Daniela.
«It would be easy to dream of healing»
Igor Protti, in his end-of-year message, says he is “a little sore, with an uncertain future but I will try to face it to the best of my physical and psychological possibilities”.
He wonders what to ask of 2026 and responds with the frankness of someone who is going through a complicated period: «It would be easy to dream of recovery but I would be happy not to have any more bad news. This is why tonight, even without great celebrations, I thank life for still being there.” In closing, I wish you all a “Happy New Year so that it may give you health and lots of serenity”.
The disease
Igor Protti has been battling colon cancer since the summer of 2025. He announced it on Instagram in July but the diagnosis dates back to the previous month. He underwent stoma surgery and underwent 8 cycles of chemotherapy. In September, however, he spoke of a worsening of the disease which in the meantime had reached the vertebrae, forcing him to start radiotherapy.
How are you
In December the former Livorno and Bari striker was awarded by the Tuscan Press Association as “Sportsman of the Year 2025″ for his career. On that occasion, as reported by La Nazione, he gave updates on his state of health: «It goes by days, we’re a bit on a roller coaster where some days it’s a little better and others it’s decidedly darker. I continue chemotherapy and radiotherapy and something has improved, fortunately. Unfortunately, in recent months, further problems have arisen that need to be addressed and as long as we are allowed and as long as they give us the opportunity, we will try to address them.” Just a few days earlier he had also played the role of torchbearer in Livorno in view of the Milan-Cortina Olympics.
