Nicola Brienza the three-year anniversary is served, with a staff made in Cantù

Official announcement arriving for Nicola Brienza on the bench of Acqua San Bernardo who confirms his ambitions also with the choice of deputy.

Let 2024/25 begin. These are watershed days that the Brianza basketball club is experiencing, determined more than ever to put the disappointment of the A2 play-off final against Trieste behind them. The new Board of Directors was launched following the increase in share capital, with the additions of Andrea Mauri (Cantù Next), Antonio Munafò (Progetto Giovani Cantù), Lorenzo Longhi (Cantù Sports Holding) and Giuseppe Rizzello (ASM Global Italia), also for as far as sports management is concerned, we wanted to make a break with the recent past.

Today’s morning, in fact, the press release relating to the separation with Devis Cagnardi. And everything is already abundantly prepared for its replacement, with the return of Nicola Brienza. The class of ’80 embraces the beloved white and blue colors again after the experiences gained in L’Aquila Trento from 2019 to 2021 and in Pistoia in the last three years. A period, the Tuscan one, full of satisfactions for the Cantù native: a promotion to the top flight against Cantù, an A2 Super Cup and the title of best Lba coach awarded to him a few weeks ago.

Now a new challenge, that of bringing Acqua San Bernardo back to the category that best suits it. An absolutely not obvious mission, with an average level of the championship that will certainly rise after the reform which will provide a single group made up of twenty teams, with various places rich in history and which will certainly also aim for promotion. Without neglecting a pressure that, inevitably, will be different from that experienced in Pistoia.

However, the prerogatives to do well will not be lacking. Starting from a higher budget, but also passing through a competent technical staff, young and hungry at the same time. According to the latest rumors gathered, in fact, Nicola Brienza’s deputy will be Davide Villa. Originally from Biassono but a long-time Cantù fan, the class of ’83 has led Urania Milano for the last seven years, achieving promotion to A2 at the second attempt. A young coach therefore on the launching pad, who could also have waited for the call as head coach of a second series club rather than choosing the (temporary?) path of assistant.

Mattia Costacurta towards confirmation as Nicola Brienza’s assistant

Mattia Costacurta should finally complete the Brianza bench. There seems to be no doubt about the reconfirmation of the 32-year-old former PGCjoined by Devis Cagnardi last September after the latter’s promotion as Cantù coach. These therefore, barring sensational changes, are the shoulders that Nicola Brienza will be able to benefit from next season. The first, it should be remembered, as head coach of the Brianza team starting in the summer: in 2018-19, in fact, he took over from Evgeny Pashutin during the tournament, recording a record of 9 victories and 4 defeats. An excellent result which, however, was not enough to qualify his team for the play-offs, ousted only due to the poor ranking.
