What still gets people talking is the grandiose goal achieved by Jannik Sinnernew number one in the world after Djokovic’s retirement. He also intervened on the issue John McEnroeexpressing some doubts about the Italian and his fury over the Serbian’s injury.
Number one sinner, McEnroe: “It’s not easy to hold on”
McEnroe, former number one of the world for good four consecutive years from 1981 to 1984, he preached calm about the result achieved by Sinner, now playing against Alcaraz: “Italians are passionate and emotional like me, while Jannik is serious and staid. Becoming number 1 for you is a potentially disruptive role, you had a taste of it with Berrettini, finalist at Wimbledon. With what generosity will Sinner want to give himself to a country hungry? He repeats that he is only focused on improvements. I’m curious to find out. It’s not an easy position to hold, eyes always on you, the pressure, everyone pulling at your jacket. Where does Sinner usually rest in Italy? Does he know that he will have to go around escorted? He is a quiet and reserved type, who likes to travel under the radar: it will clash with Italian enthusiasm. I hope he enjoys his role as leader and gives himself some room for maneuver otherwise the number one risks crushing him.”
