PALERMO – It will be Serie B2 again next season. The GBT MedTrade Volley Palermo treats itself to an afternoon of great emotions in the gym of the “Dante Alighieri” school and overturns the Messina team of La Saracena, gaining the mathematical certainty of playing a national championship again next year.
Two sets down, an atmosphere that had become surreal, then, the reaction of pride and heart seasoned with clear tactics and clean technique against an opponent already satisfied and intent on taking home the entire stake. The motivations, however, really had the upper hand this time. In that fourth set closed by Martina Pirrone and her teammates 26-24 there is a bit of the essence of Linda Troiano’s girls’ championship.
A hyperbole of emotions and performance who have often lit the flame of passion and, at times, completely extinguished the enthusiasm in a troubled season also due to injuries. And the presence on the sidelines of spiker Marta Li Muli, who was forced out in the first leg due to a sprained knee that will keep her out until the start of the next tournament, gave that feeling of a positive closing of the circle. An implosion of all those negative sensations that had physiologically accompanied the preparation for this match this week.
The final statements
President Domenico Arena barely held back tears: “It was becoming a nightmare. But now it’s all over. Thanks go to the technical staff and the girls who have always believed in us, today more than ever, and who wanted to confirm their stay in Serie B2 with a victory. No one has ever given us anything, destiny put us face to face with challenges which, evidently, we were able to overcome, but which made us suffer perhaps more than we had expected.”
Coach Linda Troiano receives open applause and hugs: “It had been a challenging week, especially from a mental point of view, because in the meantime we had also lost an Under 16 regional final in Enna against Catania again in the fifth set. This time, however, we recovered it and wanted to win. Now, however, we want to end on a high note. Saturday’s trip to Paola awaits us. There will be time to think about the future.”
