Mick Shumacher, the interview: “Returning to F1 is my goal” | FP

By Carlo Platella
2024 sees Mick Schumacher return to racing as a starter in an FIA world championship. Together with Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxivierre, the German leads theto Alpine Hypercar A424 which from this year debuts in the premier category of the World Endurance Championship. The 6 hours of Imola did not smile on the crew of the #36, but in Qatar the Alpine has already shown signs of promising potential. Endurance racing embodies a fascinating discipline, justifying, according to Mick, Sebastian Vettel’s interest in racing the 24-hour race par excellence. However, the German’s mind turns to single-seaters, a world to which he hopes to one day return.

So Mick, how was your WEC debut?

“I would say the first race was positive. In the end we finished seventh and ninth, we didn’t expect it. The fact that there were tests before the race helped, especially for a young team like us, who still need to fine-tune some things. At Imola however, with only three test sessions to be divided between three drivers, times are tight. So we are happy, but we are still aware of the challenges that await us.”

What aspect did you find most difficult as a rookie in this championship?

“Probably the traffic, but I would also say the short time in practice. A single-seater driver is used to having the whole hour of free practice, whereas here he is more concerned with making the most of the time available on the track. The cars are a little slower, so you have more time to do everything and things don’t happen too quickly. This is helpful for a rookie coming in after racing faster cars. I would also like to mention the systems, but it depends on the pilot. For me they were not a problem, but for others it can be difficult find yourself managing traction control and other things ”.

Speaking of traffic, for a premier class driver is it more fun or a nuisance?

“Traffic implies that something is always happening. You must position yourself in such a way as to waste as little time as possible. The leading driver in Formula 1 almost always benefits from blue flags, but even in that case he must try to pass, losing little time. My goal obviously is to return to Formula 1. If I ever succeed, I will see the benefits.”

How do you find the Hypercar to drive? Is it physical enough?

“I would not say. The g forces are not as high as in Formula 1. On the other hand, you always have to find a compromise between your driving position in the car and that of two other drivers. I would prefer to have it slightly different, even though all three of us are quite similar.”

What is the longest stint you have done in this car?

“Two or three hours. We did a test where I drove for a few hours for the first time and it was enlightening for me. I started to appreciate what Le Mans will be like and I understand that I will have to prepare it differently. I am already aware that I will sleep very little, but I care a lot about sleep! Even from the outside you are always worried about what the machine is doing, so you sleep with one eye open.”

Why did you choose endurance racing for this stage of your career?

“It was the best compromise I could find, keeping one foot in Formula 1 but racing for a world championship. The WEC took off with the new regulations. Many successful drivers have moved to this championship and there are numerous manufacturers. It’s a growing category and one that saves me from moving to Japan or the United States, which I don’t want to do right now. I prefer to focus on the career I can build here in Europe, be it in the WEC or a return to Formula 1.”

We know that you and Seb [Vettel] you are friends. Have you talked about his possible presence at Le Mans?

“Yes, I saw him at Aragorn’s test. It was nice to see him behind the wheel again and wearing the helmet with the German flag. It would probably be a fun race for him to do. I don’t know if it will be this year or next, but I’m sure he will try at some point, because it’s worth it.”

Was he the one asking you for advice this time?

“He asked me a little more questions than usual, but on the other hand he has a great deal of experience. He has always been passionate about racing, of any discipline. I’m sure he will enjoy it.”
