After the good results obtained in Bogota and Stuttgart, Sara Errani finds continuity on his beloved clay and qualifies for the main draw of the WTA 1000 in Madrid 2024. The girl from Romagna defeated the Argentine Julia Riera and the Spanish wild card Leyre Romero Gormaz in the cadet draw, obtaining the pass to the main draw and continuing to chase the dream of a fifth Olympic participation in her career.
At this point, however, the Italian does not want to stop and is preparing to face a first round that is certainly difficult but not impossible against Caroline Wozniacki. The 33-year-old Dane, who returned to the major circuit last August after more than three years of hiatus, is struggling to climb up the world rankings but is currently still outside the top100.
The former world number 1 (top of the WTA rankings for 71 weeks) received a wild card for the Mutua Madrid Open and is looking for an exploit in view of Rome and Roland Garros. Five precedents between the two players, with one 4-1 score in favor of the Scandinavian. However, the most recent direct clash dates back to 2018 in Istanbul, while Errani’s only success came in 2008 in Portorose.
