Very complicated qualifying so far for Ferrari in the Chinese GP. If Charles Leclerc managed to hit the time in Q1 only at the last minute, in Q2 Carlos Sainz ended up against the barriersalso causing the session to be suspended with red flags immediately flying after the Spaniard’s accident.
Sainz made a mistake entering the last corner, ending up wide and touching the sand with his left rear wheel. At that point, the Spaniard completely lost control of his Ferrari, which spun right on the straight, ending up against some billboards which perhaps softened the impact against the barriers a little.
The front is certainly damaged and will need to be completely replaced, but the feeling is that there are no further problems with the Spaniard’s car, who will be able to get back on track, thanks also to the stop imposed by the jury to allow the track to be cleared of debris from the accident.
There are seven minutes to go until the end of Q2 with Sainz still having to set a time, but even Charles Leclerc cannot possibly be considered calm in ninth position, with a time obtained on used tyres. Obviously at the top is Max Verstappen, who is the huge favorite to win pole position.
