During an interview with Lydia Mee of Sports IllustratedAlain Prost, legend of Formula 1 and four-time world champion, expressed admiration for Max Verstappen, the current star of the circuit. Despite the praise for the Dutch driver’s abilities, Prost highlighted a significant concern regarding the current competitive environment.
Prost’s Criticism of Formula 1 Competition
The racing veteran commented that although Verstappen’s abilities are unquestionable, the lack of consistent competitive opponents impacts the value of his world titles. “It is undeniable that Max is an extraordinary driver, but the real challenge is to compete with rivals on equal terms, with other teams. So his titles lose value if you don’t have at least 1-2 opponents. I really hope that Ferrari and also Mercedes come back to worry him” said Prost. This lack of regular competition, therefore, according to Prost, could make Verstappen’s successes less significant compared to those achieved in more competitive eras of Formula 1.
