Fights, fires and vandalism. In Rome New Year’s Eve full of chaos

New Year’s Eve full of chaos in Rome. Brawls, fires and devastation kept firefighters and law enforcement busy all night. A New Year’s Eve in the capital where there was a succession of inconveniences on the streets of the city, which did not offer any discounts. Episodes recorded far and wide from the center to the periphery. Attacks which culminated in a clash between two groups near the Colosseum, where at least fifty people started a fight. And then fires: in Tuscolano, in Acilia and in the Bronx of Torrevecchia, where waste was set on fire. More injured due to firecracker explosions: at least 28, according to an initial assessment from the police headquarters.

Brawl at the Colosseum

As mentioned, a fight broke out a few steps from the Colosseum with the images immortalized by the Brazilian YouTuber “al.jugglermachine” and posted on Instagram. In the videos you can see a group of young people who started launching rockets. In the same area, an ambulance was stuck in traffic and bottles and firecrackers were thrown from above. A heated situation, with a rocket launch by a group of boys who landed near another group. At that point pandemonium broke out. The opposing factions got closer and started to heat up. First the pushes, a few too many words and then they moved on to action. With kicks and punches.

Violence but also fires. Cars were engulfed in flames in via di Saponara, near via Domenico Morelli. The alarm was raised by the residents and the police and firefighters intervened on site. And then in Torrevecchia, in the area known as the “Bronx”, a fire was set which enveloped a pile of rubbish in the middle of the street. Furthermore, fires broke out in Bravetta and also on the balcony of a house in via Carlo Denina, where a shutter was damaged and one person was intoxicated. Balconies were also on fire in Quadraro and Casal Bruciato. Dumpsters, however, were destroyed by the flames in Città Giardino, in the square Mount Gemma.

Finally, the ordinance signed by the mayor Roberto Gualtieri did not stop those who decided to shoot the firecrackers. One of these shattered a bus shelter in Piazza Cornelia. An evening which, due to the explosion of the barrels, recorded the number of 28 injured, at least according to an initial assessment drawn up by the Police Headquarters. Three of them, the police said, were taken to the Tor Vergata polyclinic for minor injuries to their hands due to the explosion of the firecrackers.
