Per l’ex-creative director del multiplayer di Call of Duty, Greg Reisdorfthe fact that i games reaching the price of 100 dollars is inevitable by now, it would only be a matter of time, and probably not much longer left at this point.
The question has been recurring for months in discussions on the near future of video games, considering that this generation has now assimilated the standard of tripla A a 80€ ($70 in US) and is starting to have to do with titles priced at €90 ($80 in US), as we have seen for some physical games for Nintendo Switch 2.
Considering the general crisis of the video game market and the constant increase in production coststhe next rock seems to be the price at $100, which could translate into a disturbing overshoot of €100 in Europe.
Just waiting for the first try
“Sooner or later the $100 game will come, just that no one at the moment wants to be first to do it,” Reisdorf reported in a recent interview. “All the publishers are waiting. The Outer Worlds was priced at $80 without development even knowing about it,” he reported.
This last issue concerns Microsoft’s initial decision to launch The Outer Worlds 2 at a price of $80 as the first experiment in this sense for Xbox Game Studios, which however was quickly revised and corrected, returning the price to the standard $70 after the great controversy unleashed.
Video game prices could rise again in 2026, but especially for micro-transactions
“I’m sure Grand Theft Auto VI could do it and it would still be a smashing success and everyone would be thrilled because it will be a quality product,” added the ex-Call of Duty director.
“You get what you pay for, right? GTA Online is huge too, with all those servers and everything else that makes it work on the custom side, which costs a lot to keep it running.”
According to Reisdorf, the main suspect in starting the practice of pricing at $100 would be GTA 6, perhaps the only game that can afford to attempt such a move and still achieve enormous success, but at that point the standard could be adopted by others, such as Call of Duty.
On the other hand, according to the developer, in some cases these are titles capable of offering a large amount of content on multiple fronts including single player, multiplayer, game modes and online support, therefore a higher expense on the part of users would be justifiable.
