The American military attack targeted and destroyed a port area, presumably used for loading drugs onto boats
Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that the United States destroyed a pier used by vessels accused of being involved in the drug trafficking in Venezuela, a possible first ground attack since the start of the US military campaign against drug trafficking in America Latina.
The United States has been exercising for months strong pressure on Caracasin an attempt to force the resignation of the president Nicolás Maduro, accused by Washington of being the head of a vast network of drug traffickers.
They carried out numerous attacks on boats belonging to suspected traffickers, killing more than 100 people in the Caribbean and the Pacific.
The latest attack was conducted Monday in the eastern Pacific against a vessel involved “in drug trafficking operations,” according to the military.
Until now, the US administration provided no evidence demonstrating that the targeted boats were actually transporting drugs. For several weeks, Donald Trump has threatened to attack drug cartels on the ground in Latin America, but so far no attacks have been confirmed.
«There was a large explosion in the pier area where they load ships with drugs. (…) So we hit all the ships and now we are hitting the area, (…) and it’s gone,” the US president said on Monday from his Mar-a-Lago residence, where he was hosting theIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He did not reveal the location of the attack, simply stating that it occurred “on the shore”.
He also refused to say whether the operation occurred conducted by the army or the CIA. The Republican president was questioned by reporters after hinting at such an attack in an interview broadcast on Friday.
In a radio interview with billionaire John Catsimatidis, one of his supporters, Donald Trump said that the United States had an “important plant” hit allegedly used to produce drug trafficking vessels.
«Two nights ago we destroyed it. So we hit them hard», he stated.
Contacted by the France Presse news agency, neither the Pentagon nor the White House have confirmed these statements. For its part, the Venezuelan government has not made any official statements on this attack.
Nicholas Maduro denies the American accusations and claims that the United States is trying to overthrow him for take possession of Venezuelan oilthe country’s main resource.
