Davide Tizzanopresident of the Italian Rowing Federation (Fic), twice gold medalist at the Olympics, died at the age of 57 at his home in Naples. The Italian manager, who had been ill for some time, had triumphed at Seoul 1988 with the four sculls and ad Atlanta 1996 in doubles. Tizzano also participated in the America’s Cup twice, winning the Louis Vuitton Cup with Paul Cayard in 1992 in San Diego and riding Mascalzone Latino in 2007 in Valencia. He also led the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games.
In a press release from the Federation it is recalled that “with his extraordinary strength and temperwhich during his career as an athlete led him to win two Olympics (gold in Seoul 1988 in the four sculls and Atlanta 1996 in the doubles), to participate in two editions of the America’s Cup (1991 and 2007) and to win numerous managerial and organizational challenges, the President of the Italian Rowing Federation he fought against a bad illness until the end”.
Tizzano was appointed president of the FIC on 24 November 2024 after having held the positions of vice-president (2013-2016) and councilor (2017-2020), as well as leading the Campania regional committee (2001-2012). Since 2021 he was also president of the International Confederation of Mediterranean Games. From 2014 to 2024 he directed the CONI “Bruno Zauli” Olympic training center in Formia.
The funeral will be celebrated tomorrow, Tuesday 30 December at 5pm, in the Basilica of the Incoronata Madre del Buon Consiglio of Naples. The note from the Federation also reminds us that “his light will never go out and he will guide his children forever Rosanna, Vittoria, Giuseppe Leone and his wife Roberta”.
The statement concludes by observing that “the Federal Council, moved, together with the General Secretary, all the federal employees, the technical staff and all the collaborators, rallies around the family of the President and friend Davide in this moment of great sadness and mourns the loss of an extraordinary figure who contributed so much to the growth of Italian rowing and national and international sport”.
