Carlos Alcaraz González breaks his silence after the words of his son’s former coach who had hinted at external pressures behind the breakup, implicitly accusing the tennis player’s clan
Carlos Alcaraz González, father of the world number 1, breaks his silence one week after the announcement of the separation between his son and Juan Carlos Ferrero. And he does it with a phrase that sounds like a reply to the statements released yesterday by coach a Mark: «Everyone is free to express their opinion based on what they know». He then closed, refusing to comment further on the matter.
In fact, the words arrive the day after the interview in which Ferrero said he was “hurt” since the interruption of the collaboration with Carlitos after seven years together, while accompanying this sensation with «a feeling of tranquility and that I did my duty.” The coach had also hinted that «people close to Carlos» had influenced the divorce decisiona clear reference to the most influential figure in the 22-year-old champion’s life: his father.
Behind the divorce: contractual issues
Ferrero, also with a past as ATP number 1, confirmed what has already transpired: they are at the origin of the rupture contractual issues. «Everything seemed to be going well. It is true that when a year ends, certain things need to be reviewed regarding contracts. There were some issues that both sides disagreed on,” he explained. «One part pulls in one direction and the other in another. Carlos’ team thinks about what’s best for him, and mine thinks about what’s best for me. Maybe they could have been resolved if we had sat down and talked, but in the end we didn’t.”
The coach also revealed that he had abandoned the team’s WhatsApp chat: «Once it was confirmed that we would not continue, I said goodbye to everyone. I received individual messages afterwards, and I am grateful for that.”
Seven years together, from Murcia to number 1
It was Alcaraz who announced the separation with a long post on social media last December 17th. «It’s very difficult for me to write this. After more than seven years together, Juanki and I have decided to end our collaboration. Thank you for making my childhood dreams a reality. We started this journey when I was just a kid.”
Ferrero responded by implying that the decision had been made by Carlos: «Saying goodbye is never easy. I wish I could have continued». Recalling the early days, he said: «One of the moments I remember most fondly is when Carlos was 15 to 18 years old. We always went everywhere together: training, tournaments, hotels. We were both lucky.”
Asked if he would accept an offer from Sinner, Ferrero a Mark he replied: «Now is not the time to think about something like that. I still think about Carlos every day.” But he did not close the door on a future collaboration with his former student: “He has the potential to be the best tennis player in history.”
