John Robertson dead: Nottingham Forest in mourning, won two European Cups

Forest’s legendary left winger passes away on Christmas Day aged 72. He left his mark in the finals of the two top European competitions won by the club: an assist in 1979, the decisive goal in 1980

December 25 – 4.32pm – MILANO

The legendary manager Brian Clough had defined him as the “Picasso of our game”. British football today bids farewell to one of its great champions, John Robertson, who passed away at the age of 72. Legend of Nottingham Forest (ten years ago the fans chose him as the most loved player in the club’s history), he also left his mark with the Derby County shirt and with that of his national team, Scotland.

and trophies

With Nottingham Forest the Glasgow winger won seven trophies, including two European Cups: the one in 1979, in which he assisted Trevor Francis in the success against Malmoe, and the one in 1980, where he was decisive by scoring the goal against Hamburg. With Scotland (28 appearances and 8 goals) he scored the winning goal in the famous match against England in 1981. John McGovern, captain of that Forest team, one day made an important comparison for him: “Robertson is like Giggs, except that he didn’t just have his left foot but both good feet”.

career

After a career of 16 seasons, 599 games and 99 goals, in 1990 he became assistant manager to his former teammate Martin O’Neill, whom he followed for almost 20 years on the benches of Wycombe, Norwich City, Leicester City (with the victory of the first trophy in the club’s history), Celtic (which reached the UEFA Cup final against a young Mourinho’s Porto) and Aston Villa.
