The European elections 2024 will take place on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June: voting will take place on Saturday from 3pm to 11pm and on Sunday from 7am to 11pm. The counting will start as soon as the polling stations are closed, and the ballot papers from the European elections will be the first to be scrutised: only then will we move on to those of the municipal elections and, in Piedmont, of the regional ones. There will be an exit poll at 11pm with the first estimate of the election results, while the first projections will arrive later in the night.

In the European elections all the Italian parties will run separately, and we will vote with the proportional method: it means that there will be no alliances, but each will obtain seats in proportion to the number of votes they get. Up to three preferences can be expressed, as long as they are candidates of different genders (two women and one man, or two men and one woman). Samples of the ballot papers have been released, which will be different in the five electoral constituencies: Islands, South, Centre, North East and North West.

Samples of the ballot papers by constituency

The ballot papers in the European elections will be different in each constituency, not only due to the order of the lists, which has been drawn, but also because they will have a different colour:

“I’ll explain to you why only 2% of people in prison manage to vote”

The symbols and candidates on the ballot paper

On the ballot paper the order of the symbols will be the one that was drawn, and will be different in each constituency. At a national level, the lists that are present in every constituency I am:

In various constituencies, then – all except the Islands – there are lists that were presented not throughout Italy, but only in those regions.

How to vote in the European elections, rules and preference votes

The proportional system applies to the European elections in Italy, whereby each list will obtain a number of seats proportional to the percentage of votes obtained. There is a barrier threshold: only those who obtain more than 4% of the votes will be able to have seats. On the ballot paper you will only find the symbols of the parties, and next to them there will be three lines. It will be possible to put an X on the symbol of the chosen list, and express up to three preferences, writing the name of the candidates on the list. In any case, preferences will have to go to people of different genders: two women and a man, or two men and a woman.

Seats by constituency and the election of MEPs

He will elect throughout Italy 76 MEPsdivided as follows between the constituencies:

  • 20 MEPs in the North West
  • 15 MEPs from the North East
  • 15 European deputies at the Centre
  • 18 MEPs from the South
  • 8 MEPs in the Islands

The number of elected representatives on each list will depend on the votes obtained in the various constituencies. The first to be elected will be those who have received the most individual preferences. The order in which the candidates are included in the list will not be influential for the election, there will be no distinction between those at the top of the list and the other candidates: only the number of preferences will count.
