Beyond 3 thousand Spanish journalists and writers they signed a manifesto in support of the socialist prime minister Pedro Sanchez and his wife, after the leader denounced being at the center of a ‘mud machine’ set in motion by the galaxy of the right and ultra-right. The manifesto states that “the attack by the media and the far-right justice against the prime minister’s wife is a new attempt to subvert the popular will expressed at the polls with illicit means”. What is defined as a “campaign of hoaxes, falsehoods and harassment” against members of the last two left-wing coalition governments, claiming that they were coordinated and financed by right-wing political parties, average aligned, businesses and members of the judiciary.

The legal complaint against Sanchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, was presented by a far-right platform that claims the woman used her position to influence business deals. The group, Manos Limpiasacknowledged that the complaint is based on newspaper articles. Spanish prosecutors argue it should be archived. “The undersigned journalists invite civil society to join this manifesto and to mobilize on social networks and in the streets against this anti-democratic outrage“, we read in the poster. “Governments are chosen and changed at the polls and in Parliament”, “no to judicial and media coups. No to the mud machine.” According to the Popular Party, Sanchez’s behavior is instead a pathetic ploy to try to gain support in the next elections regional and European elections.

Meanwhile, the site reports Politicthe letter with which Sanchez announced a pause to reflect on whether or not to continue to hold his office has “triggered feverish speculation on Spain’s political future and on the socialist’s chances of obtaining a leading position in Brussels“. In particular, there are those who hypothesize that the prime minister will become the next president of the European Council. Brussels is preparing to assign the most important positions in the EU after the European Parliament elections in June and the political parties that obtain the most votes will compete for the leadership of the European Commission, of the European Council, of the European Parliament and the office of High Representative. THE socialistswho will probably remain the second largest group in the Parliament, are aiming for the top post of the European Council, currently occupied by the Belgian liberal Charles Michelpoints out Politic. The move to Brussels could prove to be “a clever exit from the fractured and toxic Spanish political scene“.
