It took a hundred years, but the University of Milan finally has its first rector. This is Marina Marzia Brambilla who received 1,651 preferences against the 644 obtained by Luca Solari. The run-off had arrived after the first round challenger Gianluigi Gatta had unexpectedly withdrawn (despite second place) specifying that he would not support either candidate. Brambilla will take office on September 1st and will lead the Milanese university until 2030.

The character

Fifty years old, born and raised in Milan, Marina Marzia Brambilla began working for the State University twenty years ago, after graduating in Foreign Language and Literature from Iulm and a PhD in German Language and Literature from the University of Pavia. Today, as can be read on her official CV, she is a full professor of German Language and Linguistics, in service at UNIMI since 2003. Over the years she has carried out an intense teaching activity and a targeted research activity, combining these with a commitment to service at the University, resulting in numerous delegations and, in the six-year period 2018-2024, in the position of Vice-Rector delegated for the Planning and Organization of Student Services. You are the President of the University Language Centre, SLAM, which you helped create. Responsible for numerous initiatives involving collaborations with institutional partners such as the Lombardy Region, the Municipality of Milan, the Education Office and the main Ministries, he is project leader of Spoke 1 “Urban regeneration” of the MUSA innovation ecosystem (PNRR), within which coordinates research and interaction activities with the territory in a project that looks at urban evolutions, such as MIND and Città Studi. She served as Commissioner for National Scientific Licensing and was an evaluator of numerous projects and research, making a solid contribution to the development of German linguistics.

There are still few female directors in Italian universities. As reported in the latest “Gender Analysis” report by Anvur, the university evaluation agency, with reference to 2022 data, there are only 12 women among the rectors of Italian universities, from today 13.
