Geolier and Ultimo’s latest poem at the top of the charts, what does it mean? Here is the video. The last frame of the video clip for L’ultima poetry, a single by Geolier with the participation of Ultimo, is a sign written, white on black, which says: “The voice belongs to the people”. The sentence seems to follow that phrase already considered proverbial in 798, when Alcuin of York reported it in a letter to the King of the Franks Charlemagne: “[Le persone oneste] they should not listen to those who usually say that the voice of the people is the voice of God, because the restlessness of the people is always close to madness”. As with any adage, its original (political) applicability is sacrificed to a more universal meaning. It is common practice, in fact, to use this expression to determine that the taste of the majority is somehow universal and sacred.

This would also seem to be the case for The Last Poetry, where the device of the video of making the actors sing, interpreters of ordinary people (two couples, a lady hanging out the washing, a boy loading fruit into a box, two friends traveling, a pizza chef at work, and so on) could reinforce another meaning, which we extrapolate from the broader context in which the passage comes to light. Geolier and Ultimo are, in fact, two of the artists to whom a conflicting reading of the expression would best apply: on the one hand there is the people who sing our music, on the other someone else, who probably considers himself superior to the taste popular. Can we imagine that we are referring to the press room of the Sanremo Festival which, both in the case of Ultimo in 2019 and in the case of Geolier in 2024, voted for other songs in the competition compared to the overwhelming majority of opinions in the televoting?

Maybe not, as we will see in the end. But this is what many of the listeners believe who left a comment under the video, on YouTube, along the lines of “a salute to the Sanremo press room” or “a moral slap to the imbeciles of the press”. And it is legitimate to think that even in this case the voice of the people is to be taken into high consideration. After all, L’ultima politica is a song that seems written to contain both the tastes of Geolier fans and those of Ultimo fans in a single embrace: the tempo and the mood are those of a ballad (a term which, as we know , has its complexities), that is, the genre favored by both pop songwriting (predictably) and Italian rap (less predictably).
The last poem is a love song, and “the heart is not in charge” – to use another popular saying. Its contents are those of many ballads: the end of a relationship; the impossibility of being separated but the difficulty of being together; lack of communication and loneliness even within a relationship.
