Once Upon a Time in America: Jennifer Connelly remembers the audition for her big screen debut | Cinema

In 1984 Jennifer Connelly makes his big screen debut in Once upon a time in America, where she plays Deborah as a child. In a recent video interview with Vanity Fairthe actress recalled her audition for Sergio Leone’s cult:

At the time, I had no training, no skills [in precedenza, era apparsa solo in spot pubblicitari]. I think it helped me get the part that I was quite similar to Elizabeth McGovern [interprete del personaggio da adulto]. I was supposed to play a ballerina and so they asked me to improvise a ballet. I’d never done it before, so I must have looked very ridiculous, but somehow I got hired.

The experience on set was then fundamental for his career:

It was really important to be on the set of Once Upon a Time in America at 11 years old. A great film with an extraordinary director. I was fascinated by Leone: I found him to be a genius, but also very kind. At the time I had no idea what I was participating in. We shot partly in New York but then recreated some of the city’s streets on set in Rome. I loved being there, it was magical for me, and it made me fall in love with the idea of making films.
