Although there are still articles online that declared the end of the Avatar project already in 1999, history has shown that the saga of James Cameron it’s truly timeless…and the takings of Avatar: Fire and Ash confirm the public’s love for the Pandora franchise.
At the time of writing this article, in just two weekends of programming Avatar: Fire and Ashes has surpassed $760 million globally: Christmas was extraordinary, during which James Cameron’s sci-fi epic grossed $181.2 million from 51 foreign markets and $245.2 million globally.
These ticket sales score a minimum drop of -25% compared to the international opening weekendan absurd figure that only James Cameron’s films seem capable of achieving: so far, the Disney and 20th Century Fox film has grossed $217 million in North America and $542 million at the international box office. Outside of the United States and Canada, the top markets are China with $99.6 million, France with $54.4 million, Germany with $43.1 million, and Korea with $32.1 million.
Avatar: Fire and Ashes is already the sixth highest-grossing film of the year and after having surpassed Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle (714 million dollars) it will very soon also leave behind Jurassic World: Rebirth (869 million dollars) and A Minecraft Movie (958 million dollars). Next weekend Avatar 3 is expected to become the fourth blockbuster of 2025 to cross the billion-dollar markafter two other Disney giants, the remake of Lilo & Stitch (1.03 billion dollars) and Zootopia 2 (1.3 billion dollars and growing) and the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2 (which reached the astronomical figure of 2.1 billion and is currently the best grossing of the year, as well as the fifth all-time).
Obviously the box office of Avatar: Fire and Ash will be fundamental for Avatar 4 and 5, scheduled for December 2029 and December 2031 but awaiting the definitive green light from Disney.
