Everyone knows All we have to do is crybut not everyone knows about the three different versions of the film with Massimo Troisi and Roberto Benigni. The famous story of Mario and Saverio, catapulted by mistake into the 1400s, changes substantially depending on the editing: here, then, are the main differences.
Standard version
It is the best known and most broadcast version on television. After arriving in the past and meeting the inhabitants of the village of Frittole, the story focuses above all on cultural and comical misunderstandings. The protagonists’ journey takes them to France, where meet Leonardo da Vinci. Convinced they can enlighten him with modern notions, they end up explaining concepts to him in a clumsy and approximate way, even going so far as to teach him the game of the broom. In the finale, Leonardo builds a locomotive inspired by their ideas, suggesting that the future has now irremediably changed.
Extended version
In the extended cut, the story is enriched by one sentimental and dramatic subplot linked to the character of Astriahaa warrior tasked with preventing the arrival of foreigners in Spain to protect Columbus’ expedition. Here emerge jealousies, betrayals and a strong conflict between Mario and Saverio, which reaches the point of physical confrontation. This version also clarifies Saverio’s true motivations: the desire to prevent the discovery of America to prevent his sister from suffering for love in the future. The final race on the beach, with the caravels already departed, represents the point of connection with the standard version.
Third version (unconfirmed)
Finally, there is a rumor circulating on the web of a third version, never officially confirmed, which would have a different ending and closer to the novel on which the film is based. In this case, Mario and Saverio they would be able to return to the 1900sclosing the story with a return to the original temporal order.
