There are revelations that, even years later, continue to influence the way an entire saga is read and interpreted. In the vast and stratified universe of Star Warsfew have been as decisive as the official confirmation of the identity of the Chosen Onea central theme of Skywalker Saga and one of the most debated among fans and scholars of the franchise. Although many associate this prophecy with the films of the prequel trilogy, it was an animated series that definitively put an end to the matter, with a twist that turns fifteen today.
The prophecy of the Chosen One is introduced in The Phantom Menace as an ancient Jedi prediction related to the balance of the Force. According to the Order’s beliefs, an individual would be born to destroy the Sith and bring harmony between the light side and the dark side. Right from the start, Anakin Skywalker appears as the ideal candidate: born without a father, endowed with extraordinary potential and at the center of enormous expectations. However, his tragic fate and transformation into Darth Vader they made the prophecy increasingly ambiguous, fueling for years the doubt that the Chosen One could be someone else.
Over time, the focus shifted to Luke Skywalker. It is he, in fact, who rejects the dark side, believes in his father’s redemption and contributes decisively to the fall ofEmperor Palpatine. Some have even called Leia into question, especially in light of a famous line from Yoda The Empire strikes againwhen he states «No, there’s another one», suggesting that hope was not placed in a single person. The complexity of the topic has increased further over the years and with the different ideas that George Lucas he had in mind for the future of the saga.
However, definitive confirmation came in 2011, within Star Wars: The Clone Warswith the story arc set on Mortis. In these episodes, Anakin, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka enter a place outside of time and space, deeply connected to the Force. Here they encounter three enigmatic entities: the Father, the Daughter and the Sonembodiments of balance, the light side and the dark side respectively. The heart of the story is the Father’s attempt to push Anakin to take his place as guarantor of balance, a passage that unambiguously establishes the young Jedi’s role as the Chosen One.
Mortis’ arc is deliberately mysterious and open to symbolic interpretation. It is unclear whether what happened was real or some sort of vision, and Lucas himself has always deliberately left the nature of this place vague. However, even considering Mortis as a metaphor, the meaning remains intact: Anakin is the focus of the prophecythe one around whom the fate of the Force revolves. In the years since, other products have continued to recall Mortis and his entities, from Star Wars Rebels up to Ahsoka, reinforcing the idea that that passage was anything but marginal.
Fifteen years later, that twist remains one of the most important moments of the entire sagabecause it definitively clarified an enigma that had accompanied it Star Wars from its foundations.
