A thrilling discovery this afternoon in the waters off Livorno. Some fishermen, during a fishing trip, have spotted a three-metre shark. The video of the animal in the water went around the web causing panic among the swimmers in the area. The point indicated by the fishermen is three nautical miles in the sea in front of the city of Livorno in Tuscany, probably in front of the southern area of the port.
Fabrizio Serenafrom Livorno, is one of the leading shark experts in Europe, a scholar who was already responsible for the marine sector of the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Tuscany until 2017, but coordinator at the Cnr for the whole Mediterranean, and member of the working group that it concerns the conservation of sharks in particular.
“Hard to say exactly what shark it is. That is certainly a shark, and belongs to the Lamnidae family, i.e. the large ones. Like white, emery, mako. They all have particularities, which we can ascertain when the animal is dead and we have it available to be able to analyze. In water it is more difficult. Especially from the perspective of the video, shot from above and only seeing the back. But I don’t think it’s a great white shark. The muzzle is very sharp, more likely to think of the Mako.” said the expert in an interview with Il Tirreno.
Specimens that can also be found not far from the coast, as in this case. They generally flee unless the human is behaving differently, or there is intense grazing going on. Of course they are dangerous. In our waters it happens to spot them. Both in the Secche delle Meloria area and further south of Vada. They are rarely seen, they are evasive, and from the images in the video it is not risky to classify them exactly.
Meanwhile today Wednesday 21 June the harbor master’s office has issued a circular inviting information, including photos and videos, regarding the alleged sightingemphasizing to pay the utmost attention when bathing or other recreational tourist activities.
