According to WWF Italy is in a state of “permanent climate disaster”. For this reason the organization has urged the immediate adoption of a governance of the climate crisiswith the approval of a climate law and the implementation of the Adaptation Plan.

Extreme weather events, such as the recent torrential rains in Valle d’Aosta and Piedmont, which have caused landslides, floods and incalculable damage, highlight the urgency of action. temperatures on the riserecorded from 1981 to 2023, are a clear sign of the seriousness of the situation

The effects of climate change, in addition to multiplying extreme events, highlight the country’s enormous delays in preparing and responding adequately. Unfortunately, local administrations have often preferred tourism projects rather than land protection initiatives.

What can (and should) be done

The climate crisis represents the main threat to the safety of citizens, with record temperatures and extreme weather events that follow one another. To address this emergency, it is necessary reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt the territory to the effects of climate change. It is crucial to manage water resources and hydrogeological instability at the river basin level, promoting nature-based interventions and environmental restoration.

The situation is aggravated by theincrease in land consumptionwhich has reached unsustainable rates. It is imperative to recover areas of natural flooding, restore old routes and start renaturation interventions. A policy of adaptation to climate change must be integrated into ordinary planninggoing beyond the logic of emergency.

WWF calls for immediate and decisive action, with the adoption of effective climate governance, the approval of a law on climate and land consumption, and the full implementation of the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change. Only in this way can we avoid that the number of tragedies and victims continues to grow.
