“The new train drivers have returned home. From Rome, Milan they will now work in Naples”, beamingly announces on his social profile the councilor for Infrastructure Edoardo Cosenza, posting photos of the first hires for the metro line 6 that will start operating in the middle of the month. But once it is up and running, other specialists will be needed and the representative of Palazzo San Giacomo makes an appeal: “Come back to Naples”.

While, obviously, the ANM is conducting searches throughout Italy to find personnel. The new line, extended for about 5.5 kilometers, will in fact connect Fuorigrotta to the Historic Center, including crucial stations such as Mostra, Mergellina, and Chiaia and will represent a leap forward for the urban mobility of Naples, significantly improving connections between the different areas of the city. But it is not just an infrastructural work if the final objective can also be the entry into the workforce of Neapolitans. Perhaps giving the opportunity to those who have moved away, to return to Naples. This is the case of the 11 new train drivers, a very specialized category, already trained and ready to enter service shortly. Nine come from Milan and 2 from Rome. All Neapolitans returning, like the 3 station heads, another very specialized category, arriving from Bologna and Milan. Yesterday was the souvenir photo with the councilor Cosenza and the mayor Manfredi while in a few days there will be the entry into service.

The route has been awaited for over thirty years, if we exclude a brief period of operation that ended with the collapse of Palazzo Guevara di Bovino in 2013. But the line has been in gestation for decades: completed for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, everything was blocked first due to the lack of some permits and then due to Tangentopoli. The project was then resumed in 1997 with work restarted in 2002 according to a more detailed project that we will see shortly. In fact, the first ANM interchange will be built at Municipio, where Lines 1 and 6 will cross and so passengers will also be able to reach Mergellina and Fuorigrotta. But in the future, Line 6 will also touch Posillipo and Bagnoli. From a duplicate route, as it is today, it will become a very important line that will unite the entire city. The trains have also been modernized and will be able to transport 7,600 passengers per hour and in each direction, with a frequency of about 4.5 minutes. The project will be completed by a depot and a series of buildings designed to include the best technologies for energy efficiency and control of the entire subway.

“Starting with a new metro line, with 8 stations, a dedicated control center, also means new jobs, with various qualifications. At full capacity, we will need something like 150 workers. And there are also Neapolitans who had to emigrate to the North returning home, often highly specialized figures”, begins Councilor Cosenza. But these first technicians are only a small part of the entire workforce needed for the new line. “We need many more, Anm is looking all over Italy: I am making a real appeal too. This is also a great satisfaction and a sign of relaunching the city”, concludes Cosenza.
