Umbria, work kills. Seven deaths in five months. Region with red flag

Perugia, 2 July 2024 – With seven deaths in five months and an incidence of fatal injuries on red-flagged work, Umbria remains among the worst regions for workplace safety. This is what the Vega Engineering Safety and Environment Observatory reports, which with the ‘incidence’ parameter indicates the number of workers who die during work activity in a given region or province based on the number of employed people present in the same area. In short, the index allows us to compare the accident phenomenon between different realities, even if they are characterised by a different working population.

And unfortunately our region together with Valle d’Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Sicily and Puglia it’s in the red zonethat is, it is one of those regions with an accident incidence higher than 25% compared to the national average. In the orange zone there are Calabria. In the yellow zone: Abruzzo, Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany, Basilicata, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Molise, while Lazio, Sardinia, Marche and Veneto are in the white zone. Going into even more detail, we note that in the province of Perugia there were 6 deaths at work from January 1st to May 31st of this year, with an incidence of 21.8 compared to the national average on a number of employed people equal to 278 thousand.

Things are a little better in the Terni area: there was a ‘mortal’ here, with approximately 83 thousand employed and an incidence of 12 points (yellow zone). Also in the first five months of the year the Observatory draws up an identikit of the workers most at risk, a figure that continues to be worrying among older workers. In fact, the highest incidence is recorded in the group of workers over sixty-five (with an incidence of 55.0), followed by the group of workers between 55 and 64 (with an incidence of 19.4). And the most affected sector remains construction. “Having almost reached the halfway point of the year, the projection for the end of 2024 of victims at work already seems tragic and similar to that of previous years – explains Mauro Rossatopresident of the Vega Engineering Observatory for Workplace Safety and the Environment in Mestre -. From January to May 2024, there were 369 victims, 11 more than at the end of May 2023.

Unfortunately, compared to the same period last year, work-related deaths have increased by +5.5%. “But as always – Rossato claims – the incidence is the real indicator of risk for workers in our country, since we are talking about victims in relation to the working population”.
