The announcement of the sanctification of the blessed Elena Guerrafrom Lucca and founder of the Congregation of the Oblates of the Holy Spirithad been done by Pope francesco last April.
During today’s consistory, Monday 1st July, the pontiff decreed the date: the nun who was born in Lucca in 1835 will be made a saint next October 20th.
“We are truly very happy – commented the bishop of Lucca, Monsignor Paolo Giulietti – the Diocese will participate in Rome for two days: both on the 20th for the canonization and on the 21st for the traditional thanksgiving mass. These are very important days and a program will be published soon by the diocesan organizing committee, which also includes the Oblate Sisters of the Holy Spirit”.
Guerra, in fact, founded in 1882 a female community dedicated to Saint Zita, with the aim of promoting theeducation for girlsamong which was also the future saint Gemma Galgani. Fifteen years later, the community was elevated to a Congregation by Pope Leo XIII, but the reference to the nuns as Sisters of Saint Zita. After his death in 1914, his beatification was decided by Pope John XXIII in 1959.
