L’Aquila: Via XX Settembre reopened for two-way traffic

Ahead of the scheduled completion date of July 17, Via XX Settembre in L’Aquila reopens today for two-way traffic

The temporary traffic light installed in recent months and which, especially in the first few days, had brought city traffic to a standstill, has been removed. This morning the final operations before the almost definitive dismantling of the construction site. The company that carried out the work has also installed the guardrail, brown in colour, chosen specifically to avoid impacting the surrounding environment and often used for mountain roads, to ensure that all the necessary safety conditions are in place.

Supports were also built clearly for the retaining wall. The work cost the Municipality about 500 thousand euros. A pile was built with steel and concrete micropiles. Subsequently, excavations were carried out to build the foundation beam and the curbs. The reinforcements were then prepared and the concrete was poured.

The last phase involved the restoration of the road surface, the reconstruction of the collapsed portion of the wall, the construction of underground services for the new public lighting, signs and the installation of barriers. The road can be reopened because the work will continue in the underlying via Borgo Rivera.

The road closure dates back to December 2023. In reality, an accident that occurred in January 2023 had already damaged a portion of the retaining wall but in a different position. It was not the only accident: the subsequent ones pushed the Municipality to adopt the closure and to immediately start the works for safety reasons. The points damaged by the accidents were two but, if for one it was not a problem to intervene with a simple solution, the problematic section was precisely that of the object of the closure that overlooks Santa Chiara, where it was also necessary to secure the surrounding land.

On this occasion, the Municipality of L’Aquila acted immediately with its own project which was shared with the local Superintendency since we are talking about a wall dating back to the 1930s.
