There is already a water crisis in Molise: dry springs and excessive use also from Campania

With a known to the Prefectures of Avellino and Casertathe special company Molise Acque informs that from Wednesday 19 June adjustments will be made in order to limit the emptying of the tanks and pipelines under management. “Given the consumption and the factual situation, it is more necessary than ever to carry out night-time closures of the water distribution networks.”

Molise is in a water crisis, and from Campania, a region to which Molise supplies water, there is an excessive demanda with the springs which are, in fact, in very sharp decline. The night closures are not an abstract hypothesis but “a necessity,” and soon our region could also experience a situation of great suffering.

“There is a decline in the supply of deep springs and even more so in superficial ones – we read in the note from Molise Acque – At the same time there has been an increase in water demand by the municipalities served, compared to the same period of the year 2023 The quantities currently required (and we are still in the month of June) force the hydraulic and electrical systems to work at their maximum potential, so in addition to not being able to further supply greater quantities of water, the risks of them breaking significantly increase. ” A phenomenon that is already clearly visible in lower Molise, where for several days there have been failures in the lifting systems resulting in suspensions of the water flow.

“The excessive flow of water exiting the tanks towards the municipal networks, greater than the incoming flow – continues Tatti’s note – leads to the emptying of the tanks and pipes with consequences that everyone can imagine.” Molise Acque technicians, starting from Wednesday 19 June, will carry out appropriate adjustments in order to limit the emptying of the tanks and pipelines managed by the Company.

In light of these premises, “we represent the absolute and immediate need for all the parties involved to carry out adjustments on the distribution networks to avoid emptying the tanks and networks under their responsibility, as well as the municipal tanks served by Molise Acque. Given the consumption and the actual situation, it is more necessary than ever to carry out night-time closures of the water distribution networks or what is deemed necessary to raise the water level in the tanks or limit its lowering.”

The situation is critical. “There are almost 120 million (practically 50% less) fewer cubic meters compared to the same period last year,” summarizes meteorologist Gianfranco Spensieri.

Stefano Sabatini, president of Molise Acque, confirms that the Molise springs are suffering due to drought and poor snow, with a consequent increase in water demand. Technical checks are underway to adopt urgent measures in collaboration with local mayors.

The situation of the sieve water networks and climate change are causing a “high water stress.” A rationalization of water is planned, with possible night-time closures of the networks to conserve resources. The Liscione dam is already at critical levels.
