COSENZA – «General surgery – says the professor Bruno Nardodirector of “Falcone” surgery at the Annunziata hospital in Cosenza, and scientific director of the congress – faces a systemic crisis: on the one hand, artificial intelligence and the new ones technologies they represent a concrete reality that surgeons must know and integrate into clinical practice; on the other the vocation crisis and the decline in enrollments in specialization schools they put the very future of the discipline at risk.”

«It is necessary – adds Nardo – to analyze the causes of this crisis, identify effective strategies, strengthening surgical training, which is fundamental to guarantee the training of new generations».

The XXI congress of the Calabrian Association of Surgical Sciences, ECM provider Xenia, will develop these themes in dedicated sessions, sharing experiences and approaches with regional and national speakers, and proposing the establishment of a regional surgical group of Calabrian oncological surgery to network. The groundbreaking ceremony is set for on June 14th, at 2.30pmin the Hall of Mirrors of the Palazzo della Province of Cosenza. After the opening, which also includes masterly readings, including one on Artificial Intelligence given by the prof. Gianluigi Greco, one on possible strategies to counter the vocation crisis, entrusted to professor Ludovico Docimo, and, the last, on technological innovations in surgery, of which professor Mario Testini will be the speaker.

There Saturday morning session, June 15thwill concern the regional oncology network with a focus on surgery in Calabria for malignant tumors operated on in the last five years. «As part of this theme – continues Nardo – the speakers will present the data from the Calabrian experience, in order to demonstrate that even in Calabria it is possible to carry out high-level surgery and avoid healthcare migration».

As part of the proceedings of the meeting, prizes named after “Francesco Crucitti”, “Rocco Docimo” and “Antonio Petrassi” will be awarded, in order to remember the great protagonists of surgery and ideally connect them to the new generations of Calabrian surgeons. «The congress – concludes Professor Nardo – will also be an opportunity to announce the opening, in the next academic year, of the Specialization School of General Surgery at the University of Calabria. The objective is to create a training network for the spoke hospitals in the province of Cosenza, and attract young surgeons and thus prevent them from leaving our land.”
