Modica, the delays in approving the budget do not worry the mayor Maria Monisteri –

In recent days, the municipal administration of Palazzo San Domenico had been harshly attacked, both by Vito D’Antona of the Italian Left and by the city coordinator of South Call North Giovanni Cavallo, over the delay in approving the budget forecast for the three-year period 2024/2026.

But these attacks do not seem to interest the mayor of Modica Maria Monisteri who, when contacted by us, declares: “I’m not worried at all.”

Yet the reasons to be so are all there. The Region, in fact, had invited the defaulting municipalities, including Modica, to quickly approve the budget.

However, as highlighted by the opposition representatives, nothing seems to be moving in this direction from the Municipality. Among other things, as stated by D’Antona himself, the Sicilian Region also invited the municipalities that have not approved the 2023 financial statement by 30 April 2024, to approve it under penalty of being placed under commissionership which for Modica would mean being simultaneously subject to four commissionerships for failure to approve the entity’s fundamental accounting tools.

An alarming situation for everyone also because the failure to approve the financial instruments means the blocking, for example, with regard to, as underlined by Cavallo di Sud calls Nord, hiring. A consequence that the Municipality of Modica is already paying for given that the staff is significantly reduced, especially that of the municipal police. Therefore the failure to approve the budget also has repercussions on the lives of citizens.

“I don’t want to respond to controversy but I prefer that the facts do so– declares the mayor – I am in continuous contact with the Auditors, who I expect for next week. I’m trying to do things calmly, well, without haste because in haste you do the wrong things. In any case there is a commissioner ad acta who follows us. We are working to approve the 2022 report and the offices are already preparing everything necessary for the 2024-2026 report which will allow us to get up to speed. Our aim is to start well-defined paths for which we never have to turn back. We are working with a different modus than in the past

Maybe this is the real news. The administration admits that in the past it worked in a “hasty” manner, so to speak, and announces a change of pace compared to the modus of the then mayor Abbate which caused the damage for which the Monisteri administration is now paying the consequences, which however he was aware of the legacy that had been left to him and above all the city.

Now, however, the mayor would like to remedy the situation and who knows, perhaps the rumored bad feelings between the two are due precisely to the fact that she is trying to do things correctly so that, as she herself admits, “we never have to go back”.

Of course it won’t be easy but the intention to try could already be synonymous with change. A change which, however, requires concrete facts which to date have not yet emerged, such as the approval of the 2022 financial statement given that we are already in 2024.
